Using Excel templates, you can now show instant quotes in iPhone/Android smartphones, build mobile data entry applications feeding electronic forms to your Inbox, or create clever calculators that work even when the phone is offline.
Dec 19, 2011 — A new member of the SpreadsheetConverter family recently saw the light of day at http://www.SpreadsheetConverter.com. SpreadsheetConverter iPhone/Android allows you to convert Excel spreadsheets to iPhone format, giving Apple smartphones the ability to run spreadsheets and smart forms converted from the Microsoft Office desktop environment.
“This enables a sales person to do amazing things, like provide an instant quote for 200 customized city buses over a cup of coffee at a coffee shop. No matter how complicated your pricing rules are, if you can put them in Excel we can put them in your iPhone”, says Anna Winter, sales manager for SpreadsheetConverter.
The new version can also convert Excel spreadsheets to Android format. This makes it possible to use smartphones from manufacturers like Nokia, Samsung, LG, ZTE, HTC, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Huawei to perform spreadsheet calculations and fill/send electronic forms developed in Microsoft Excel.
“We can make a powerful app out of any Excel spreadsheet. A salesman can select the proper printer model with his smartphone instead of fetching a thick binder. An evaluation report can be completed on-site, saving hours of work later at the office laptop”, says Winter.
Smart forms created with Excel can now be used by a mobile workforce for product selection and configuration, surveys, on-site evaluations and other suitable data collection/data entry applications. Completed forms are sent directly to a predefined e-mail Inbox, or saved with a direct-to-database subscription service.
Spreadsheets can also be used as templates for smartphone calculators for business, finance, engineering or personal life.
“Sometimes small things like a simple return-on-investment calculator can save a sale. Now you can have it in your pocket. Or you could calculate the exact power and cooling figures for a rack of web servers while the customer gets his car. There’s really no limit except the small screen”, says Winter.
SpreadsheetConverter is available for free trial at http://www.spreadsheetconverter.com/download/free-trial.htm. It creates web pages that are completely standalone, do not use Excel and run on all web servers. You only need Excel and the Spreadsheet Converter add-on for the actual conversion from spreadsheet to web page format. There are no monthly, per-server or per-user fees, and you may use the program and the web pages it creates for as long as you like. Full versions start at $127.
